Young business fined for releasing offensive odours by staff at business
A large number of businesses have been fined for posting offensive odours in the business on their sites and social media.
About 150 businesses were fined a total of more than $100,000 over the last week for posting offensive advertisements to social media and for posting unapproved images.
Some of the offending images included "Faggots" and slurs and some had inappropriate imagery, such as animals being killed, but the majority were clear images that had already been published on social media and were no longer published on their sites, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
The penalties will be spread across businesses throughout the industry, including hotels, restaurants and supermarkets.
The offending advertisements had been published by companies that advertise on various businesses' websites, including social media.
Advertising code for retailers
In April 2013, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a Code of Practice that businesses have to adhere to to make sure their advertising practices are fair.
"There are a lot of fine words, a lot of fine phrases and I think that a lot of it is, frankly, very easy for people to slip through the cracks and I think a lot of businesses do that to us and in the last six months, there have been a lot of fine words and a lot of fine phrases in particular about how to actually deliver content," ACCC Commissioner Rod Sims said.

Former lord mayor nominates for the federal seat
Sutton is not yet officially on the ballot
Sutton may need to make a last-minute change in his election bid
One of the most intriguing people to take power in the upcoming local elections in Canberra, with a history of running for the House of Lords and later taking part in the federal Labor party, is now on the doorstep of power.
Nyamatong Sutton, who ran a former British colony for 24 years before he was appointed lord mayor of the ACT town of Canberra, is one of a handful of hopefuls for the federal seat of Canberra.
When he was named to the post of Canberra Lord Mayor, it was described as the largest post up for election ever and only the third time in Australian political history that a candidate has sought it.
The first time was when Robert Menzies defeated the incumbent, Alan Geddes, to secure his seat in 1873.
He had also been elected to Parliament as an independent, taking his seat out of the Commonwealth and replacing him.
Former mayor of Canberra is running for federal seat
While he had the resources and the ability of most politicians, the local electorate did not support him - and had no problem electing him as the first non-Cambodian to represent Australia on the House of Lords.
Former Liberal premier Bob Hawke was given the nod as well when the country's first Asian-Australian lord mayor, Tony Gwynney, won his seat in the ACT as a member of the Greens party.
Sutton, a former Labour minister and Labor councillor, did not become a local Liberal until he was elected MP.
He was previously the minister for community safety, housing, the environment and transport and was chief minister of Tasmania at the time of his election to parliament.
He also served as minister for community development and development and development of Australian tourism under former prime minister John Howard.
With just under 12 hours to go before voters go to the polls for the federal elections on August 9th, The Australian and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation are running a live chat with Sutton and other hopefuls to get to know them and to see who they might have a shot at taking the seat.

The drum friday 22 october 2013
So, there has been a lot of speculation about this. First of all, I have heard absolutely no evidence that the video of the drumming in question is actually played by any club or group. There are some very interesting theories online. The first is that there is a song which has no song, but I'm unable to find it for sale anywhere online. Another is that the music video for the drumming is in fact made by the BBC, but I don't think that is possible, because the video is almost totally blank. Finally, I suspect there is some sort of technicality that would make this video impossible to put together, but that seems unlikely because the music videos themselves do show very clear drumming. The rest of the discussion is to be found here.
Camp fire cannibal receives life sentence after sentencing hearing

An arsonist who set a blaze at a Wisconsin nursing home in 1995 that left 77 patients dead is getting life in prison, according to a Wednesday announcement from prosecutors.
Cheryl Williams, 47, was found guilty in June of setting fire to the Rosemont Nursing Home and Family Care Center in Chippewa Falls and killing 76 people, mostly children aged 7 to 18.
Her mother, Steven Fisk, 55, was convicted in November of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He is due to be eligible for parole in 2026.
Her stepfather, Steven Fisk Sr., 56, is being tried for his role in setting the blaze. He was found guilty of second-degree arson and sentenced to three years in prison.
Investigators concluded that a hot, toxic gas was used, causing smoke to spread from the building, and Williams was responsible for starting the fire, according to prosecutors.

She served a sentence of 60 years and eight months in prison when she was found guilty in 2011.
Williams was in jail after her release from State Prison No. 805, after failing to show up to a hearing the previous May. She served 14 years on the Wisconsin parole board and was released back in 2003.
She went back to prison when her trial was about to begin. The judge ordered her to remain in custody for the first 90 days and not to have contact with anyone she did not know at the time of setting the fire.
Williams was granted a special exception in March for her past history of mental illness and alcohol abuse and treatment but she wasn't allowed to speak about what happened, said prosecutor Mike Feuer.

Feuer called the verdict an abdication of responsibility on the part of the jury and said the court "could have had more time to see these people before sending them to prison." He said that because Williams admitted to her involvement and said she took the action to save people's lives, she deserved the death penalty.
